Classes & Schedules
DUCKS: Saturdays (9am-10:30am)
The “Ducks” program is for 5-6 year old SBYC family members only. This program is designed to build comfort with the beach, bay, and the Opti. Activities include team-building games, swimming, floating, steering, paddling, flipping and trying to sink the Opti! Participants will also learn the basic boat parts and basic maneuvers. Ducks are NOT required to have their own boat.
WARRIORS: Saturdays (9am-10:30am)
The “Warriors” program is designed for sailors who are not able to participate in our weekday program. This class is open to SBYC family members aged 7 and up. The purpose of this class is to give the students a strong foundation for sailing. Sailors will learn about boat parts, basic mechanics of moving around the boat through drills off and on the water. Warriors are not required to have their own boat.
OPTI 1: 9am-12pm
Opti 1 is for sailors in their first year of sailing! Sailors must age 7 prior to June 1st OR have completed 1st grade. The purpose of this class is to build comfort and confidence in the bay. Sailors learn basic safety skills, terminology, rigging techniques and basic mechanics of moving around the boat. All skills are mastered on land prior to moving to the water. There is no instruction on LBIYRA interclub days (most Wednesdays). Some Fridays are “activity” days! (stay tuned to our weekly email updates for exact Friday schedules).
OPTI 2: 9am-12pm
Opti 2 is generally for sailors in their second year of Opti sailing. All skills learned in Opti 1 are reviewed; however, the curriculum moves more quickly. Lessons focus on building confidence and comfort with sailing through drills both on and off the water. Sailors are introduced to racing and may participate in races at SBYC or even a local green fleet regatta if they feel ready! There is no instruction on LBIYRA interclub days (most Wednesdays). OPTI 3: 9am-12pm
Opti 3 is intended for sailors who have completed Opti 1 and Opti 2. All skills learned in Opti 2 are reviewed; however, the curriculum moves more quickly. Basic racing skills are taught. Opti 3 sailors are encouraged to participate in our Tuesday afternoon point race series as well as weekly inter-clubs and other regattas. Some Fridays are “activity” days! (stay tuned to our weekly email updates for exact Friday schedules).
OPTI RACING: 9am-12pm
Opti Racing is for sailors typically in their 3rd or 4th year of Opti sailing and focuses on more advanced aspects of racing. Sailors in Opti Racing are expected to participate in our Tuesday afternoon point race series as well as weekly inter-clubs and other regattas. Class time includes conditioning and physical fitness. There is no instruction at SBYC on interclub days or days in which the group is scheduled to attend another regatta. Some Fridays are “activity” days! FEVA BEGINNER: 9am-12pm
This class is for sailors in their first year or two of Feva sailing and who are at least 10 years old. The focus is on learning the basics of sailing a double-handed boat with main, jib and spinnaker. Sailors in this group must have a Feva or a teammate with a Feva. Sailors in this group are encouraged to participate in our Tuesday afternoon point race series, weekly LBIYRA inter-clubs (Wednesdays) as well as other regattas. Some Fridays are “activity” days! FEVA RACING: 1pm-4pm
Sailors in this group have typically been sailing Feva for a year or more and are age 11 or older. Sailors in this group are required to have a Feva or a teammate with a Feva. Feva Racing sailors are expected to participate in our Tuesday afternoon point races, weekly interclubs and other local regattas. There is no instruction at SBYC on interclub days or days in which the group is scheduled to attend another regatta. Class time includes conditioning and physical fitness. Some Fridays are “activity” days! (stay tuned to our weekly email updates for exact Friday schedules).
LASER RACING: 1pm-4pm
Sailors in this group have typically been sailing for several years and are generally aged 12 and up. Weight range for a Laser is 100-150 lbs. Sailors are expected to participate in the Tuesday afternoon point races, interclubs and other local regattas. There is no instruction at SBYC on interclub days or days in which the group is scheduled to attend another regatta. Class time includes conditioning and physical fitness. Laser sailors are required to have both a “Radial" rig as well as a “4.7” rig. Some Fridays are “activity” days! (stay tuned to our weekly email updates for exact Friday schedules).
O’PEN SKIFF: 9am-12pm
Sailors in this group have typically been sailing for several years and are in the 10-14 age range and under 135 lbs. Sailors in this group are encouraged to participate in the Tuesday afternoon point races, interclubs and other local regattas. Class time includes conditioning and physical fitness. Some Fridays are “activity” days! (stay tuned to our weekly email updates for exact Friday schedules).
SUNFISH: 1pm-4pm
Sailors in this group have typically been sailing for several years and are generally aged 12 and up. Sailors in this group may participate in our Tuesday afternoon point race series, weekly LBIYRA inter-clubs (Wednesdays) as well as other regattas. Some Fridays are “activity” days! (stay tuned to our weekly email updates for exact Friday schedules).
420 RACING: 1pm-4pm
Sailors in this group have typically been sailing for several years. Sailors are generally 14 at up. Sailors in the group must have a 420 or a teammate with a 420. Sailors are expected to participate in the Tuesday afternoon point races, LBIYRA inter-clubs as well as other local regattas. There is no instruction at SBYC on inter-club days or days in which the group is scheduled to attend another regatta. Some Fridays are “activity” days!
